Where do the native Greeks go for a getaway while still staying in Greece? |
Travel Info Only for 3 or 4 days. When driving or taking a ferry, the travel time should only be about 3 hours. Travel Tips Athenians go to Nafplio, Loutraki or Xylokastro, which are situated very close to Athens or they take the ship and go to Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Kea. People who live in Thessaloniki always goes to Halkidiki, the only destination citizens of Thessaloniki adore! Others I would suggest Sifnos, its a beautiful Cycladic island with great beaches, food, landscape. The tourism is top quality and its like 3 - 4 hours by highspeed boat. I go there every year , I am lovin' it! Greetings from Athens Hello dear! Most Greeks have a vacations house, or some close relatives (parents, brethren, ...) in the country side, at a driving distance of 2 to 5 hours, or at an Aegean island, so this is where they go! First of all, if a Greek has a cottage in the countryside, he will go there to relax. If he does not, where he goes depends on money willing to spend, how much days he is planning to stay etc. Many people go to Aegina island, which is about 1 hour away from the Pireaus port and is a great relaxing place close to the city, especially if your time is limited. Another great choice is Spetses island, which has the unique (i think) feature of forbidding cars inside the island! The island is very beautiful and can be accessed easily, again with the ferry by pireaus port. The "slow" ferry takes about 4 hours to get there but the fast one (Flying Dolphin) takes 2 hours. Hydra island is also a beautiful choice, 3 hours trip from Pireaus with the slow ferry and 1 hour and a half with the fast one. As for the mainland, you have a lot more choices. It depends from what is it you actually seek: sightseeing? beaches? nightlife? :) But for the summer, i would reccomend one of the above islands. i have cousins in greece who drive out of athens down to xilocastro every weekend where they have a mobile home/trailer spot.its beautiful beach there.not that any of the beaches there are bad.but it is a really nice spot.not touristy at all. Greece is full of vacation spots. Many Greeks prefer the islands. Like another member here said, many Greeks maintain a summer home. I am one of them, and spend my summers in Milos, but sometimes I go there for just 3-5 days at a time. There is an airport in Milos and Olympic Airways offers its lowest domestic airfare to the island at about 鈧?5 one-way. Ferries get to Milos from Piraeus in 3-7 hours depending on type of vessel and number of stops along the way. Milos is also 2-4 hours away from Santorini, and 45-90 minutes away from Sifnos. |
