Where to stay in athens? |
Travel Info i am travelling to athens in july and would be grateful for ideas on which area would be best to base myself to do some sightseeing, enjoy the beach, etc. i heard that it is best to be near the coast rather than in town. Travel Tips In Plaka. Others i think .... in ur *** just kidding dont know Try renting a vacation rental while you are there. It will give you more room, and is usually cheaper. First of all, Athens is not a coastal city. Some suburbs are coastal (like the South Suburbs) but the sightseeing you want to see in Athens have no beaches nearby. So no matter where you stay (inside the city or at a suburb) you will need transport to get to the area you want to visit. What i think is that you should consider what you are going to spend more time on: sightseeing and nightlife or beaches? I would recommend to use the city as your "base" and from there move to any beaches or museums u might want to visit. If you stay at city center (for example in Syntagma) , you can take the Greek Metro and be in Parthenon,National Archaeological Museum, Thisseio (Temple of Ephastus and a great place to enjoy a morning walk) and the majority of the monuments/museums of interest at no time. Also, for your nightlife, you will be really close to where the heart of the city beats at night. I would also recommend checking the "Athens Sightseeing Bus Line", which is provided by the public bus company. This is a new line which was created to serve tourists in summer that want to do their sightseeing without too much walking under the sun :) The Sightseeing Bus (Number 400) makes stops in 20 places of great interest inside Athens. The ticket costs 5 euros but is valid for 24 hours so you can get on and off the bus whenever u wish. The 5 euro ticket also includes unlimited travel with any Public Transport inside the City (like the Metro, buses, subway etc) for 24 hours. You can check more here: http://www.oasa.gr/index.asp?pageid=105... About the beaches... If you are staying in the city , you can use public transport to get you there. The good beaches are not close to the city center so you might have to overuse public transport :) You start by tak谋ng the subway from Omono谋a Square or Syntagma, heading to Pireaus. You get off the subway at the "Faliro" station, about 15 mins away. From there you take the tram (or trolley as some foreigners know it) and enjoy a seaside journey that will take you to the beaches. Note that the good beaches are the ones furthest from city center. You can check the Greek Tram site here: http://www.tramsa.gr/html/en/index.php... The best Athens beaches can be seen here: http://www.holiday-in-athens.com/athens/... You can choose which of them u want to go and then consult the Tram map to schedule your exact way of transportation :) Hope these helped. :) Please check the area around the Acropolis known as the Plaka. Yes it is touristy but it has wonderful old hotels and resturants. The stores are very diverse and the people are so friendly. Tou will find locals that can help you with traveling without using tours. Just take busses so you can spend the quality time that you will enjoy. I hope you have a wonderful time, we did. Athens is not a coastal city and apart from the monuments and the sightseeing I think you'd better find a ticket to an island, go to Piraeus and take the first ship you 'll find!!! Trust me. I live in Athens! Athens isn't coastal but its close. Why not spend a few days in an area like Glyfada which is close to the sea and also quite touristy and then stay somewhere right in the city to do sighseeing. There are lots of hotels near Syntagma and Omonia Squares and there's lots of things to see right in the city as well like the Acropolis and also other smaller ruins which can be found by just wandering around. Athens is a great place to visit, but it will be getting hot and stuffy in July - enjoy! |
