Why is racism against Albanians and Macedonians acceptable in Greece.? |
Travel Info Even on this forum many Greeks use offensive names and images to describe Albanians and Macedonians and all they get is many thumbs ups from the like minded. I thought Greece was meant to be a mordern country (like the rest of the EU) where racism is frowned upon Travel Tips Dear Siren and other friends: I will try to answer your question that has created a very heated reaction as I can see from the previous responses that you have received. I am against racism. But before I continue, we need to better understand what racism is. Racism is a fairly new word but an old concept. It was in 1982 that the Oxford English Dictionary defined racism for the very first time as 鈥渢he theory that distinctive human characteristics and abilities are determined by 鈥榬ace鈥?鈥? Although many theories and models (relative autonomy, autonomy and migrant labour models) have been developed by sociologists to explain this ever changing and complex aspect of society, I like Martin Luther King鈥檚 reasoning why racism is corrupt and wrong. Firstly, he affirmed that it causes significant hurt to the victims, and induces such things as poverty on them. Secondly, he revealed that racism in turn promotes 鈥榬everse racism鈥?鈥?a reaction of the victims to the behaviour they receive. Usually this results in even more violence and conflict than was present in the first place. Thirdly, racism鈥檚 damage is very widespread 鈥?it can affect the entire human race adversely. Fourthly, ignorance and racism go hand-in-hand, and there is no thought, reasoning or understanding involved in the behaviour. His fifth point was that racism reverses development and progress made, particularly in social relations. The sixth point referred to oppressed people鈥檚 inherent right to freedom, and that racism does not allow it. Finally, he concluded that it is just unfair in general, and fails to agree with any moral code of any sort. When Dr. King wrote this list, racism was probably a lot different than it is nowadays. It is a constantly changing thing; always reforming and reproducing in any culture by many influences such as media, arts, education, etc. and it has become a big factor in law and order, crime and general urban unrest and violence. Societies develop racism when they feel threatened. Greece is no exception. It is not unique either as most of the other societies around the world have similar problems. Please, do not try to find 鈥済ood reasons鈥?(excuses) for racism. To my opinion, it is simply wrong, unethical and immoral. I do not believe that most Greeks recognize that they are racist. Greeks are very sensitive and we would not like to see ouselves as racists. Unfortunately this good trait of ours becomes also our worst enemy in combating racism in our society. Unless a society recognizes that it has a problem, unfortunately, it cannot correct it. Respectfully, Konstantinos Others I've lived on a small island in Greece for three years now. And I find that they find it difficult to accept foreigners in general. But once I showed that I respected their culture. That I was willing to learn Greek and eat Greek food and make Greek friends, they accepted me. Greece is a modern country, and they accept foreigners who accept their culture and dont isolate themselves or 'reject' Greek culture. Sure there is racism, but just as much as in any other country. Something to take into consideration is that "Political correctness" is a completely alien topic to the Greeks, they dont know what it is. Meaning they have no problem expressing their opinions, whereas Rascism might not be expressed as much in other countries because the rascists themselves dont want to be persecuted for it, but deep down still harbour these feelings. First of all macedonians were and are greeks(I am one). You are talking about albanians and FYROM (slav) people. Now for the racism there isn't much to say, just see what albanians are doing here and FYROM with history and you'll understand. Come on now, Greeks were the first to frame the notion that man was born free with basic human rights and social freedoms. Last time I checked there are many Albanians living in Greece, do they get turned on by being around abusive Greeks? I think not and I think you know better.... As for Macedonians, why would Greeks be racist towards themselves??? So lets sum up, Albanians like Greeks and they prove it by choosing to live with them and since Macedonians are a branch of the Greeks unless the Greeks express self hate , well then what you have said is an Oxymoron ... how can you say things like this. .unless you have some hidden agenda.... You sound like you are not Albanian or Macedonian you sound like you come from Skopjeslavia !!!!!! Many Greeks are racist in general. Many hate Macedonians because Macedonia was part of Greece before and now it isn't. They hate Albanians because they are populating Greece in large numbers and having children, thus making their children Greek citizens. The modern Greek woman doesn't want to have a lot of children if any, because she wants to have a career first. Albanian women, while hard working, are more family oriented. Greek population is becoming an old people population and a large amount of the Greek children are of Albanian descent. Most Greek people dislike those facts. I'm Greek but I have no prejudices against anyone. Btw racism in Greece is NOT acceptable.. and not all Greeks are racists against Albanians and Macedonians or anyone for that matter. Racist people exist everywhere. I'm Greek. ABUSE REPORTED.... Go away and never show up again!!!! P.S. As for your question about me, I was not a racist against FYROM (Vardar), actually I was indifferent, until I saw how often you and other friends of yours enter the Greek section and provoke us in so many ways.... Find yourselves a job, a lover, a hobby or whatever and stop intruding where you are not wanted. Yes, with your behaviour you managed to make a racist out of me.... Only against you ...Now get out and never appear again... P.S.2 And don't make jokes with my nick and/or name... (I just realized you know "biscuits"...Evidently you steal them the way you steal greek names) P.S.3 For your knowledge I'm Italian...Surprise? |
