Is it safe to drive to Greece through FYROM or Bulgaria? |
Travel Info I am considering driving to Greece from Belgium this summer. I have already gone through Italy but I am wondering if anyone has ever tried to drive through the Balkans and if they can tell me whether it is safe and how long it took them.Thanks :-) Travel Tips I agree that crossing FYROM to get to Greece might eventually cause you trouble. Still, I cannot understand why drive through Bulgaria, which is not in your itinerary.... So, I consider your question very weard....Are you trying to get to another point? Others Take the plane lady, there is nothing but mafia all over those places. I wouldn't recommend it, because I have heard stories from reliable sources about corrupted police that required money to let you get through, mob, and unexcusable delays at the borders. Why not through Italy? Ferries are very nice and take you to Patra or the West coast- then you can drive to nice places all over continental Greece (Thessaloniki, Ioannina, etc) I've gone through Bulgaria and it is safe. The only real danger about driving through Bulgaria is insane drivers. Rich kids sit behind the wheels of powerful cars and think they own the road, speeding out of control and passing on twisty two-lane roads with complete disregard of anyone鈥檚 life. If you鈥檙e brave enough handle that, you鈥檙e completely safe from other issues 鈥?corruption, mafia, customs delays, etc. take on a life of their own in re-told stories, and in my opinion don鈥檛 make it any less safe than any other country. In recent years, I鈥檝e been on a handful of week-long road trips through Bulgaria, it is very picturesque, people are friendly, food is great鈥?You may want to check out some old pristine villages, fortresses, elaborately hand-painted monasteries and churches, a museum or two, depending how much time you鈥檝e got... ...Most likely I鈥檒l be there again in September and I can鈥檛 wait! FYROM is the former yugoslavian republic of Macedonia... It`s former bulgarian teritory too.... there are living some not very smart people... drive through Bulgaria dear! but only in main roads:) |
