Travel Tips
Hi,

I am not British but Greek but I have moved to Crete recently (not from UK). Most of the issues you need to know in detail are listed in this site: http://www.britsincrete.net/

In total, there are about 5-7000 Brits, in addition to several other nationalities in Crete. Most people I have spoken to seem to be pretty much satisfied with their lives over there. There is some passion about this place that is somewhat enigmatic to me...! Some do miss England but not seriously enough to return back. The weather, the easy going mentality and the people are among the few things they do often keep them there. In case you do have children, there is an international school in Crete. I wouldn't worry much about that. I would more worry about how the kids will share your views with respect to their new home though.

It would be very handy if you do master the Greek language. It will give you an enormous access to facilities and services but also will provide you with a lot of support from the locals in your daily life. As they are nice people, you do want to interact with them...(makes sense) as you now interact with me...(that was a good one) lol

But I would also suggest that before you ever decide to move to Crete, you do visit the place during the winter months (November to March). The place is much quieter and locals (including the Brits) enjoy it a lot this way. Yet, it is different from what you have probably seen during the summer months.

An additional advice is not to "beautify" things in Crete or elsewhere. Speak to the locals, share their daily life problems and your ideas with them and always have in mind: being there once is different from being there always! Same holds for any country I have lived so far.

Good luck and I must say a great choice overall. I did not regret it myself at all!

E-mail me if you have any specific questions with respect to Crete. Source(s): just a Greek

What a great idea, Babysham. I have always had the impression that the Greeks are a kind and friendly people.
Frank B has said it all I think!

Like you, I don't know why the first answerer bothered. Making some sort of point I suppose though have no idea what!
I lived and worked in Crete for a short time a few years ago. I would love to go back and bring my child up there. Please at least learn a little of the language. If you dont you will find the it very hard in the "winter"!
