Now that the Cold War is over, shouldn't Greece be considered a Eastern European country? |
Travel Info I mean, come on, what's the point of considering Czech Republic eastern and Greece western? Czech Republic is much more western to me. I'm not talking only about the geographic position, of course. Travel Tips Sinvce the earth is round west and east have NO meaning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From a geographical point of view it is concidered eastern European. From a political point of view it is considered western. From a historical point of view it is considered Balkan!!!! from a religious point of view again it is considered as eastern. from a tourist point of view it is considered as SUNNY!!! Others You have already answered your own question by saying: I'm not talking only about the geographic position, of course. No - I do not defend anything. But as you say yourself - the label' Western' has nothing to do with the geographic position - it is a political label. And personally I do not care about labels - they change as the wind blows. Why do you think that it is so important to put labels on things?? You call the country Greece - I call it Gr忙kenland . and the right name is probably 'Hellas'. And It is Greek culture that laid the foundation for the western culture The ancient Greek philosophers are the ones who have outlined the western philosophical way of thinking, the original language in which the Bible is written is... Greek. The western idea of 'democracy' started in Greece. In short: The western society and culture is based on Greek culture. "Now that the Cold War is over" The cold war is over since 1990... so it's about 17 years now. Greece's leaders decided that the country will belong to the West since 1950's Greece is a member of the EU since 1981. Greece has NEVER been a communist country. If western means capitalistic, then Greece is as western as France or England. But I can assume that by "western" you mean a developed, civilized country. So you obviously believe that Greece is not. I suggest that you should visit Greece once, instead of jumping into conclusions. There were agreements which placed Greece in the Western Comunity.Dont forget that also Germany which is a Western country had been divided in Eastern and Western... For the rest. FYI, Greece is the cradle of Western Civilization. Now crowl back to yer cave. Thanks for the 2 points though. Not only as Greek but also as Italian I have to remind you that: 1. The whole western civilisation is based on the greek one, as far as philosophy, science, literature, theater, architecture, art, applied arts, principals of humanism and democracy are concerned... 2. Renaissance, which flourished in Italy as from the 15th century and spread its light and principals all over Europe, your country included, is also a revival of the greek - roman civilisation. 3. Your country is not even eastern, as the orient as well has contributed too much to international civilisation. Best example the Arabs. My question now: what's the contribution of your central europe country to the western civilisation so that to entitle you to dispute the position of Greece? P.S.
