Guadalajara is a beautiful city and you would enjoy it very nice, try to stay in the Zapopan area of Plaza del Sol, is the safest for an amateur tourist.
Please don't get too drunk and you will have a wonderful vacation.

Stick to the basics:

Tourist areas:
Downtown Guadalajara, leave it before dark and shopping Plaza del Sol, you can hang there as late as you want.

Visit Tlaquepaque and Tonala in day light also, get a cab they will charge no more than 10 bucks one way, and DO NOT yip the cabbies, they are making as much money as an attorney.

If you don't get drunk and don't abuse the tequila, you will have the time of your life.
