What weight fly rod should I use for fishing for Sailfish in Guatemala? |
Travel Info What weight fly rod should I use for fishing for Sailfish in Guatemala? Travel Tips Uh, the sailfish in Guatemala can go to 120#, and the norm is probably 80 - 100#. Frankly, unless you are very experienced with fighting heavy fish on a flyrod, this ain't really a great idea! They are tough enough on conventional tackle, plus your strike and catch ratio are going to generally be much lower than with trolled dead bait. If you are determined, I would not take less than a 12wt rod. Source(s): Experience in Zihuatanejo Mexico and Isla Holbox, Mexico (tarpon).....conventional tackle, not fly rod Other Travel Tips The most used flyrod weight for sailfish is 13 to 14wt. However, most of the charter boats also have a 16 / 17wt rig and a 12 wt. rig. The most preferred fly rod for sailfish is either 13 or 14wt. with 12wt.being the next preferred weight rod. I would say anything over a ten weight. Sailfish don't get too huge but they are tough fighters. You'll need a very good fly reel with lots of backing. |
