What country should I visit in central America for vacations?

Travel Tips
I think it depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for. If you're looking for a cultural vacation with some natural wonders, I'd say Guatemala. If you're more into seeing loads of wildlife and lots of natural wonders, I'd say Costa Rica. If you're really into scuba diving or want to learn how to scuba dive for super-low prices, I'd say make a trip to the Bay Islands in Honduras.

Costa Rica has some of the most incredible biodiversity on the planet...huge numbers of species packed into a tiny area. There are hot jungles with lots of monkeys, huge butterflies, sloths, giant lizards, scarlet macaws, coatimundis (the cuter jungle version of raccoons, kinda-sorta). There are cool cloud forests, which have an incredible variety of bird life as well as lots of other animals. Costa Rica also has the largest remaining stands of tropical dry forest in the world. There are beautiful waterfalls, big old-growth rain forest trees, volcanoes, and other cool natural sights. There are also some great surf spots and some nice hangout beaches, good for lounging after a long hike through the jungle!

Guatemala has amazing Mayan ruins, many indigenous people who still practice Mayan traditions and wear beautiful native dress, and stunning street markets. The people in Guatemala are the nicest I've met anywhere (I've visited 10 countries so far), and they are incredibly tough. They've gotten themselves through decades of political strife, and yet the vast majority still seem to be very kind and positive. Guatemala also has one of the most beautiful lakes on the planet, Lake Atitlan, which is placid and huge and surrounded by 3 volcanoes. (If you go there, stay at "Casa del Mundo"...it is *amazing*! They're at http://www.lacasadelmundo.com/ ) I love traveling the country on the amazingly decorated "chicken buses"...colorful, cheap, and they really give you an idea of how the people there live and get around (just try not to look when they round blind turns going like bats-out-of-you-know-where).

The Bay Islands offer some of the most affordable scuba diving and scuba dive training in the world, and there are some very reputable dive shops and instructors there. There isn't much of a beach scene (beware the sand fleas!), but there's an underwater wonderland!

All in all, I like Guatemala the best. However, it's a matter of what you're looking for/what you're into. Also, Guatemala is the least safe of the 3 places. As with any country, be sure you read the state department warnings at http://travel.state.gov before you go, and be aware of your surroundings. If you're careful, Guatemala can be pretty safe and very fun...just be sure you don't become complacent, because sometimes it feels safer than it really is.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com has good independent summaries of different travel destinations. Those might help you decide where to go.

Have fun!

Bueno, I love Guatemala too, with it's indigenous culture; Costa Rica yes, is beautiful; Honduras where the the Bay Islands are a paradise; El Salvador has friendly and hard working people; Nicaragua has a very interesting cultural history; but, just south of all those unique and worth wile to see in their own right countries, lies one not quite Central American nor south American, Panama.

You should see Panama to obtain the maximum experience. In Panama, you will see Indigenous peoples, a beautiful and varied geography and climate, from the Caribbean to the Pacific coast, a varied Latino cuisine from frijoles to seafood, a diverse and multicultural people with caribbean flavor, Central American customs and south american flair! Que Tenga Feliz Viaje!
