I'm planning on driving from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango. How safe is it and what precutions do I need to |
Travel Info I will be traveling between Christams and New Years. Travel Tips The driving distance between Guatemala city and Quetzaltenango is around 200 kms. It takes between 3 and 4 hours to get to Xela (the nickname of Quetzaltenango). The road from Guatemala city to Xela is a very good road. The first 50 kms are highway, until you reach Chimaltenango. At this point you will start to climb considerally into the Guatemalan highlands. I live in Guatemala, and its the most scenery principal road in Guatemala. Its safe to drive, although you have to take precautions because there are a lot of curves and a lot of traffic, but nothing you wont be able to handle at perfection. There is a part of the road that exceeds 3000 meters of altitude, so being december and january the coolest months of the year, sometimes a small layer of ice can be found, but there are a lot of signs in that area ("area de hielo"). The probabilities that you will find ice is minimum (ive travelled a lot to Quetzaltenango and never found ice). Enjoy your roadtrip (try to take a few minutes to stop to watch Lake Atitlan on your way to Quetzaltenango, it will be worth it). Source(s): Guatemalan living in Guatemala. Other Travel Tips you might want to hire a guard or police officer, due to the bandits along the roads, especially this time of year Take you basic and obvious precautions, but you should have NO problem whatsoever travelling to Xela. Thousands of people dirve up there everyday and it麓s VERY rare to hear about any unsafe acts taking place. Enjoy your trip! |
