QUETZAL, come from the national bird, the quetzal. It's also the most stable currency in the region, maybe even all Latin America, same exchange rate for about 10 years. It's even gained some value in the past years. Like the others have stated, the Currency is the Quetzal (also the national bird which the Mayans belived it's feathers had special powers).
