Be sure to check they are the real deal. Use normal caution with all things when travelling. I have used them across the world, just use common sense and you will be fine.

Unsafe, and rife with Aids. That's how Tom Hanks got Aids in that movie Pittsburgh, by staying in a hostel.
Completely safe, there are numerous world wide hostel organizations. I have backpacked through Europe, South America, and some parts of Asia. Completely safe. Just be careful, travelling with a backpack everyone knows that you are a tourist, so just try to look for other backpackers, and hey let me know where you're going, maybe I can give more specific advise.
You can't throw ALL of them in the exact same category. Some are safe; some are not.

In general, they're like hotels. Some are almost luxurious, and others are dumps in unsafe areas. Do your homework and find out about specific ones.
