Hypno therapy with breathing techniques, and TENS work great. You can rent a tens unit and teach yourself how to relax that way also focus your energy off the fear while in route, it is not that $$$. Taking Valium etc.. doesn't help with fear, it is still there enough when you are relaxed physically you are emotionally drained at the end of the flight. Same deal with drinking and taking a friend along to distract those things don't wwork when you are honestly panicked about flying.. Sometimes we have to accept that we are afraid and that we are going to be regardless of what we do and weigh if we really want to do the task in spite of the fear. Only you know how much you are capable of handling. Good luck to you sorting this out.

Wear a blindfold and meditate while on the plane.
It is a tough one.

If you feel it is too hard to deal with, just ride a train. Because in the end, it is all about getting on that plane, and holding your breath during turbulence, only to breath a sigh of relief when the thing lands.
I used to be terrified of flying and had to be tranquillised for a 14 hour flight for my honeymoon. It took days for me to feel right again and I couldn't face the loss of control for the return journey.

I took my courage in both hands and made my peace...I accepted that I was probably going to die but then again we all do sometime...

Obviously I didn't, but I learned a valuable lesson...at the end of the day, it is up to you to stay calm and realise that you really do have very little to fear. You probably take more chances walking down the street these days.

My fear trapped me for years and spoiled so many opportunities that were offered to me, now I fly three or four times a year.

You can do this if you really want to...why not take someone with you who you implicitly trust to hold your hand and keep you comfortable?
just tell urself that everything will be okay and that millions of people ride planes everyday and that they all landed safely!!works for me with roller coasters!

i'm scared of heights but love rock climbing.. strange but true.. i even did a parachute jump to try and get over the fear. again great fun but i still dont like heights. my reasoning/solution is find something and concentrate. with climbing your too focused on the next move to think of heights. with th patachute jump you spend more time checking the chutes ok to worry to much.
sleep on the plain or become mentally involved with something to take your mind of it..
remeber fear is rational phobias are not
