Does long island have soft or hard tap water? |
Travel Info Does long island have soft or hard tap water? Travel Tips dont know if its soft or hard, but i do know that it tastes horrible. i lived there for years and we had to have a brita filter or else there wasnt anyway we could drink it. Others I found an article that states the following "....Power in numbers? We have three million people on the island. You would think with that many people, we would be going gangbusters," DeLong says. Our primary problem is that 90 percent of the people on Long Island are on public water. While there may be chlorine problems, the hardness can be anywhere between 5 to 8 grains. So when you start talking water softeners, it锞抯 not such a big item here. Not to mention that the place has been literally pulverized with telemarketing and in-home sales." That's From a Water Softner COMPANY,,"Long Island water service" http://www.wcp.net/archivenewsview.cfm?p... ................................. The person's Comment has gotta be considered VALID as to the "avg hardness",,, Because that's THEIR SPECIFIC BUSINESS,, they literally go "Door to Door" Testing Folk's Water Also,,to his comment's in perspective---He's discussing the matter in terms of his BUSINESS GROWTH as it relates to Demand. And he's stating that in COMPARATIVE/RELATIVE Terms. Meaning,,he's in a Market Area that does NOT HAVE extremely Hard water,,where EVERYBODY "must" be a customer. No extreme High Demand for Water Softening product/services Some Regions are a MULTIPLE of Long Island's hardness level. Long Island can be considered to clearly Be HARD WATER . It ranges from "Moderately Hard to HARD" Here's a "chart" from http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/housing/356-4... Grains Per Gallon (gpg)~~Milligrams Per Liter (mg/l) or Parts Per Million (ppm)~~~RATING less than 1.0 ~~less than 17.1~~Soft 1.0 - 3.5~~17.1 - 60~~Slightly Hard 3.5 - 7.0~~60 - 120~~Moderately Hard 7.0 - 10.5~~120 - 180 ~~Hard over 10.5~~over 180~~Very Hard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMO,,that's pretty Hard(Long Island's 5~8gr) For Folks who like soft water,,,A good Softner would be a worthwhile investment Under about 2~3 grains,,,it's sorta a "luxury",,but still very worthwhile. LOTS of Softners dont consistently and reliably produce 1.5 gr or less water....for a variety of reasons. So 2~3 Grains in reality is NOT that far from "softened water" that many folks are accustomed to. 5gr isn't Terrible,,but it is distinctly "hard" to almost anyone. 7~8 is getting pretty hard There's the actual chemistry rating,, and the actual EFFECTS of the water,, Then there's folk's Perceptions,,and usually according to what they're accustomed to. Hope that helps! |
