What is the best way to stop ears from popping on a plane due to a cold?

Travel Tips
It'll probably happen as you descend, whether you have a cold or not. Gum works, as well as sipping a bit of water or juice slowly.

To get rid of that pressure in your ears, try this:
Take a deep breath and hold it. Pinch your nose to keep the air from escaping, close your mouth tight, and then try to blow out the air. Since it won't be able to escape from your nose or mouth, the only way out is through the ears (yeah, it's all connected). That'll pop them open.

It might hurt a little, but it's worth it and you'll feel much better- it takes away the pain during decent. Source(s): I'm a frequent traveller.

Other Travel Tips

Go buy ear plugs for flying- called 'Earplanes'- they will equalize pressure and take care of any sinus issues etc. I have used them for years as I have sinus problems, I won`t fly w/o them. (I fly approx 18-20 times a year)
