What should I do to prevent carbon monoxide poisioning in the car, especially while stationary? |
Travel Info Should I open all windows and switch off the aircon to allow 'fresh' air from outside to come in? or Should I leave the windows wind up and use the aircon? This is confusing. Some people advise me to wind down the window partially. So what is the safest way. Especially when there are young children in the car? Travel Tips CAUTION!!! Never, never think that aircon can prevent from carbon monoxide poisioning in the car!!!! Aircon will only circulate what is already in the air, and will concentrate into your breathing system (like sick building syndrom in offices). The only and ONLY way to prevent bad air when stationary is to open the window (a bit). Safe travels! Others If the car is stationary, then the engine should not be on, which will eliminate the possibility of the buildup of carbon monoxide in the vehicle. While stationary or traveling, the simplest measure would be to ensure that the windows are open (even if a crack) which would allow the flow of air within the vehicle. If your exhaust system is in good condition, you have nothing to worry about. Take the car to your dealer to have the exhaust and emissions checked if you think you've got a problem. Carbon monoxide is odourless. Get your exhaust checked for leaks and make sure there are no rust holes in your car's body and you should have no problems even if standing still with the engine running. I hate driving with the windows open because of the noise but it is also said to spoil the aerodynamics of modern cars, increasing the fuel consumption. Hi! I am an RN. The most important thing to remember is that carbon monoxide binds with the hemoglobin molecule permanently. That is to say that once carbon monxide attaches to the area on the red blood cell that transports oxygen the cell can never carry oxygen again. Even damaged cells continue to circulate for as many as 90 days but do nothing for you! So this is a problem. Always allow for open ventilation with your windows down if your car is the offender because prolonged exposure subjects more cells to the fumes. If you are in the immediate area (within a confined space like a parking garage) for a short time with emmision close your windows and donot circulate the airconditioner. The important issue here is the concentration of exposure. In your home you should place a combination smoke detector with a carbon monoxide detector built in. It is probably the home safety that is your most serious health risk! The detector will alert you if car fumes or other items such as fire places, heating units ect. are creating fumes. Always "crack a window open" if using a fireplace. |
