Brunei is a conservative albeit wealthy state which is more or less safe to visit. political tensions or violence has not really been an active part of their history where the Sultan reigns free. the culture is predominantly malay and it is a small Islamic country with very high per capita income levels. I don't think there will be any major issues for you except alcohol availability if you drink.

I've been to Brunei several times on business. It is safe but extremely boring! Don't go unless you have to. Also no alcohol in general but some restaurants serve it in tea cups!
