Travel Info In flights, they always ask you to keep windows open during take off and landing, switch off lights. Why? Travel Tips By "windows" you mean the shutters or blinds that can be pulled down right? I suppose they should be open at these times so that passengers can see what is outside in the event of an emergency. I mean if the plane crashes, you want to see if there is fire outside before getting out that side of the plane or else you might be out of the frying plane and into the fire. As for switching off the lights, it also helps you see through the windows when it is dark outside, and also it helps your eyes adjust to ambient light conditions when it is dark outside so that you can see if you exit the plane. Others they turn off the lights for more power to the engine...and i dont know, i've never had them ask to keep the windows open. probably to let light in Where are you?? In Africa in a Bi-Plane?
