Where is the safest place to be in an airplane if it was to crash?

Travel Info
I sit in the very back, but was wondering if that really was the safest place to be.

Travel Tips
statistically, the rear of the plane is safer. By a small margin.

Others
On the ground.
Generally, doesn't matter. The only survivor from the Lexington, KY crash was the copilot.

But, that was the first commercial crash in the US since 11/01 (American Airlines in Queens). Absolutely the safest way to travel. Sit anywhere you want.
Toward the front
Depends on the type of crash, how the airplane impacted the ground, and if it hit something besides the ground. The rear may be slightly safer.
Sit by the escape hatch with a parachute handy.
Sit in the back of the plane. I have heard that is the safest place to stay in event of a emgerency situation.
