Where, statistically, is the safest seat on an aircraft?

Travel Info
After the Indonesian plane crash in which a number of people survived the impact, I was wondering if anyone had the expertise to tell me in which seats one is most likely to survive. Presumably this depends on whether the aircraft is taking off or landing?

Travel Tips
I have been told that the best place to sit is within seven rows of an emergency exit. This enables the best possible chance of being able to exit the plane should an emergency arise. Any further away and the longer it takes you to exit the plane, thus putting you in more danger.

Others
The pilots ejector seat!
The toilet seat.
The black box is under it - and that always survives.
I've never heard of a plane backing into an object, so the back seats seem pretty good to me.

The safest place to be when an aircraft crashes is back at the airport having missed the flight. Each crash is a unique set of circumstances and there is no one place in which you are more likely to survive than any other. You take your life and put it in the hands of others every time.
It also depends on what medium the plane crashes. If it's on water you want to be near the front as there is a good chance that a wing will 'dig in' and cause a cartwheel.

A mate of mine always used to sit near the back saying 'When did a plane last reverse into a mountain?' - I always used to say 'When did you last hear of the front crashing and not the back??'.

The absolute safest seats on the plane are the ones the crew use (the ones that face backwards). The reason they face backwards is that they significantly increase the chances of coming through a crash - enabling the crew to help the injured passengers
