What's the safest thing to do if you get caught in a rip current?

Travel Tips
When at the beach:

1. Always swim at a lifeguard-protected beach
2. Never swim alone
3. Learn how to swim in the surf
4.Be cautious at all times especially when you swim without a lifeguard
5. Obey all instructions and orders given by the lifeguard
6.Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties

Caught in the rip current:
1. Reamin calm you will need to conserve energy and you want to be able to think clearly
2.Never fight against the current
3.Think of it as a treadmill that can't be turned off which you need to step to the side of
4. If unable to swim out of it float and once out of the current swim towards shore
5. If unable to swim out draw attentions to yourself and yell for help.
If you see someone else in trouble:
1. try not to become the victim as well
2. Get help from a lifeguard
3. If there is not a lifeguard call 9-1-1
4. Throw the victim something that floats -lifejacket, cooler, etc.
5. Yell instructions about how to escape

Others
You swim sideways from the rip current instead of going forward against it. It will save your life.
I live near the beach and know this from fourth grade.
Swim PARALLEL to the shore until you're out of it, THEN swim toward shore. Don't try to fight it - you can't, and you'll just sap your energy.
Firstly accept the situation - don't panic. Go with it; stay afloat; breathe normally; wait until you're free of the strongest current, then if you are a long way from shore, raise your hand as a distress signal. Swim slowly, conserving you energy, towards the shore.
That's all very well, but who has the presence of mind to do all that at the time, I wonder? I doubt I would!
Swim parallel to the shoreline until you clear the rip current then swim ashore.
