Traveling abroad with a 9 month old baby - any advice? please?? |
Travel Info Hi. My partner and I are considering going abroad for a week (package holiday), but i'm concerned about putting our 9 month old baby boy through the experience! I'd appreciate any advice or if anybody's come across any problems when doing similar. We live in the UK and are just planning on somewhere near so the flight is short (Portugal, Spain, France etc). Here are a few Q's I have: 1) How does it work having your baby on the aircraft? 2) What about child car seats for the transfers - do we take our own or can we ask them to provide? Travel Tips i flew with a 6 month child overseas from the US to Japan (military family) and will be flying with a 16 month child back to the US during the summer, so i know what i am talking about. you can either keep the child on your lap through out the flight (it's actually cheaper to do so) or you can pay for the seat and use any car seat that is approved for airline usage, there would be a sticker on the seat that says it's approved for airline use. if you use the car seat be prepared to prove it's approved for use on an airline when you check in. take along a bottle/sippy cup or dummy for use during take off and landings and have him suck on it because it will equalize his ears. it helps to schedule flight times around naps and meals, you want him at his best rather than cranky. since you are looking at a short flight, have a snack available for him to eat, and a few toys to keep him occupied. if you are able to get out of the seat, walk him up and down the isles visiting. also, if you are asked if you want to board first, don't take it..board last this way you don't have people climbing over you and your child to reach their seats, and you don't have your child cooped up in a small space for any longer than necessary. Good Luck, and don't worry you'll do fine. i survived it. Others Hmmm.. if it's somewhere near I think it will be alright. You should call the airlines because sometimes they provide you with that. I do know that American and Continental Airlines do provide it. Good luck! Calpol 1: Just advise the travel agency you'll be taking your baby under 1 year and most airlines will let them travel for free, and depending on the aircraft type they'll have you sitting in the front of coach where you can put the stroller/carriage infront of your feet. I'd also suggest you visit your doctor, not sure if 9 months is too young, but because they're young the pressurization is really unconfortable. And could possibly damage their hearing(hearsay). 2. Not sure about European rental agencies, but National Rentals in Canada did offer child seats, again, you'd have to check with the customer service rep, that'll be booking your automobile. Again, not sure about the age thing but a baby might be more comfortable in their own baby/child car seat that you have at home rather than the car agencies one. But I guess you might not be able to install it properly or at all because of the rental agreeement.... Good luck on your trip. And have fun, and make sure your baby is safe. Hi: I have traveled with our children - (they are older now). Take your own car seat this way if you hop in to a cab etc you have it on hand. Bring your stroller they check it at the gate. Give it back to you when you land. Lots of snacks/cup for the baby - toys and the diaper bag full of supplies in the event you got stuck on the airplane. If he's a lap baby you hold him and they give you the seat (or you check it at baggage).. if you pay for a seat bring it on board. I don't think they have ones to offer - (you may call and find they do only to be mislead). Have fun. If he's an easy going baby you will have a good time. :) Mom of 3 Ive been abroad loads of times and every time there has been loads of babies on the aircraft, the baby just sits on your lap and they give you a seat belt adaptor and put it on for you. They are always very helpful to parents. if its a package holiday transfers should already be included meaning you get there and the travel rep tells you what coach to get onto. If this is not the case i would hire a car from the airport you land at, book it over the net and just specify you need a car seat for a baby |
