Before 9/11?

Travel Info
Compare and contrast the current screening procedures to those used by airport security prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Travel Tips
It varies from airport to airport, and time to time and alert to alert. But here are the major differences.

1) You have to show identification that is consistent with your ticket.
2) You have to take your shoes off and get them x-rayed.
3) You are more likely to have the outside of your suitcase sampled for chemicals
4) You are more likely to have your checked luggage x-rayed.

2 & 3 never happened before 9/11. 1 and 4 very rarely happened.

Others
I don't really see much change now. The only things new that I've observed is today there is a limit to the size and amount of liquid/gel items in carry-on luggage, and in most airports, shoes and coats/jackets must be removed before walking through security. Other than that, things seem to be virtually the same.
Depends on far back you want the comparison. Back in the 70's you could carry a pistol if it was unloaded on a domestic flight in your carry on. Many things have changed.
