Travel Tips
Depending on where you want to travel, you can go alone, stay in a youth hostel, you'll meet some great people travelling there, and it's cheap, and maybe you can hook up with some of them for a couple of day trips around the area. My friend and I took a Eurrail trip that way when I was in college, and that was a lot of fun. Western Europe is mostly safe enough to travel alone as a female.

Otherwise, a guy friend of mine took one of those guided tour groups by himself, travelling through Israel with a bunch of people of different ages, and he made some friends, and was safe there with a group. I wouldn't advise travelling to Israel alone as a woman though. But on a group trip like this you'd be okay.

How about a singles cruise? My sister did that and had a lot of fun with it. If you're hell bent on having a local person show you around their area, see if you can't network, a friend of a friend of a friend type thing. A college friend of mine, her parents run a school for people learning english, and through the school she met a guy from Costa Rica, and ended up spending a month down there with his family, to help brush up on her Spanish. You see, if there's a will, there's a way. Good luck!

You don't say where you want to go. I advise against going online for a buddy. Too risky. If you plan to stay at hostels, they're usually safe and have younger back-packers and vacationers staying in them.
The youth hostels are quite safe and you meet other travelers ,
People who are exploring too . . and they are all over the globe .

There is such a site but I forgot the name of it. The trip you want to take, maybe you can organize it as a group trip. I have been to the Caribbean a few times, I went with a group. A lot of people I knew went. Where would you like to travel?
I am assuming that you are a young lady. I would not go on the internet no matter what website looking for a stranger to "show me around a strange country" That is not the safest way to travel alone.
I would suggest going to your chosen city or what ever, then once I get there...look up the bus tours, the commercial tourist things...they cover all kinds of entertainment, and you do not have to worry about getting into a jam.
Also, sometimes if you get in touch with your local travel bureau and decide where and when you want to go to a destination..they will sometimes find another suitable travel companion, that you can meet and chat with in person before heading out.
But please do not go to the internet...you never know what you will meet up with there...not good.
Take a tour it is a great way to meet people. Contiki does tours for 18-35 year olds.
I'd say it's not a good idea to travel with someone you only know by the Internet (especially if you're a lady!)..

Perhaps you can try considering another alternative: Get into a traveling tour group - there, you'll be able to meet many new people from the tour group, you'll have a tour guide to show you around / explain details of places, and most importantly, it'll be much safer than traveling with someone you only know from the Internet.
