What sort of culture shock should I expect when returning to the USA? |
Travel Info I moved to New Zealand in March, 2006 and will be returning to the U.S. in July (2007). Some people have told me to prepare myself for culture shock in my return. Have I really been away long enough to experience this reverse culture shock? If so, what should I expect? Travel Tips I think it will depend on how much you immersed yourself into the local culture. I don't think you will have it as bad as I get it. I live in China and return to the states every summer. I have adjusted to life in Asia and America seems foreign to me now. I often feel like an outsider when I'm stateside because there are very few people who have experienced living abroad. The food also bothers me since it's so high in fat. Within the first week I have to start popping antacids. You may feel some anger towards America because things are not done the way they are in New Zealand. You will have to get use to the pace of life in the states. Others you've only been gone a year, you kidding me No comments on this one, but why go back is good not good enough? NO... First of all, New Zealand is not a third world country and secondly, you will only have been gone about a year and a half and that really isn't long enough for you to totally forget what life is like in the American culture (or lack of it). I would guess the thing you will notice the most is how Americans have a choice of so many things of the same types. Americans are the world's biggest consumers and it isn't enough to have just ONE or TWO brands of pork and beans... nope... there has to be TEN or FIFTEEN brands on the store shelf. You will also see just how crass and commercialized Americans are. You will see some differences but nothing like it would be if you spent the same year and a half in Haiti or Darfur, for instance. You will immediately be shocked going through customs at the airport Yes, mostly overwhelm by a rediculous number of choices, our fast paced EVERYTHING and a feeling that we live in a "fake"world because everyhting is so sterile and packaged and regulated |
