I don't think any thing about a Grey hound bus is safe and smoothest. Since you're going by bus I assume you don't have much money to spend on travel. There are all sorts of weird people on them, the bathrooms are dirty and the layovers in bus stations are not fun. Pack a backpack with some healthy snacks, a few things to do and try to sit at the window. Also food at layovers is usually lousy so if you have time ask about a close by restaurant.
The smoothest ride would be found in the center of the bus. Unfortunately this usually is furthest from the exit and emergency doors. Seating near the back runs the risk of smelling the toilet. It's a very long ride, so be sure to take something to keep you from getting bored; books, Walkman, etc.
Have a good trip!
