I was wondering if it is dangerous to travel outside tourist resorts in Tunisia? |
Travel Info I am thinking of booking a holiday to Tunisia this summer but would like to be able to rent a car and do a bit of touring outside the resort (Hammamet). Does anyone know if this is safe to do so? And what one needs to rent a car in Tunisia...do they need an international driving licence. Thanks! Katie Travel Tips I am an American living in Tunisia. This country is VERY safe! It is safer than the US. There is a joke here that between a police officer and a police offer you find....another police officer! There really isn't any need for the amount that we have, but the government likes to ensure the safety of it's people. Feel free to explore the country as it is VERY beautiful! If you'd like, I could give you links to pictures I have of different cities here. To rent a car here all you really need is your driving license and a form of payment. An international drivers license is not required. Hammamet is a beautiful resort city that is divided into two parts: the old town, and the new touristic town Yasmine Hammamet. The beaches are pristine, and there is plenty of nightlife there, with well over 35 discos and many restaurants. In Yasmine Hammamet is an amusement park called Carthageland. http://www.carthageland.com:82/eng/home.... A lot of tourists (as well as Tunisians) like to go there and spend a day having fun! Hammamet is also the neighboring city of Nabeul, which is known for it's oranges. If you have any more questions, or I can be of more assistance, or you'd like to see some pics of other parts of Tunisia, please feel free to contact me anytime. Other Travel Tips frightening, very sad experience to see ~~~~~~~ www.bossini.com mail to : harriet.lau@iprogilvy.com I wouldn麓t rent a car and take off on your own in Tunisia. It麓s kinda creepy but not really unsafe, but the roads are not good and without a knowledge of the language you麓d be off in the wrong direction quickly. Petrol stations are few and far between even in urbanized/tourist areas and a breakdown would be a big problem. Also, traffic is kind of crazy and there are police stationed at most every roundabout. You can get from Hammamet to Tunis and other cities like Sousse easily with the train. The trains are comfortable and inexpensive. personal experience from 2003. Only in a group and wih a guide that has a very bit gun. I always reccommend checking the Department of State web site: www.travel.state.gov the consular information sheets will cover all sorts of info for you |
