Planning A Trip to Japan, Any Advice?

Travel Info
Hey, guys. I'm planning on heading out to Japan for about a week and a half for recreational purposes. I was curious if anyone had any advice on mustsee areas of Japan? I would like to be over in the Kyoto area, since one place that is a must on my list is Nara, but I don't think I could find alot to do there for a week and a half. I'm not looking for big city life, I wanted to find some smaller areas where I can really soak in some culture and hopefully learn more about the Japanese. Oh, and if anyone has any advice on whether translators are neccessary or not, I'd appreciate it. :) Thanks in advance!

Travel Tips
Congratulations, you've chosen an excellent city to start with. Kyoto is steeped in culture, tradition, art, history, beauty, mystery and some of the best food you will every have. A week and a half . . . I could easily stay that long in Kyoto.

First I suggest buying an excellent city guide before you go, and study up. There is so much to see and do you will really need to plan your activities to get the most out of the tour. I recommend Lonely Planet's Kyoto guide. Wear comfortable shoes because walking tours are the best way to see this town.

Here is a small list of activities and sites for you to consider:
1. Sannen-zaka: a charming street lined with old wooden houses, shops and restaurants. Try Kasagi-ya for tea and snacks.
2. Ishibei-koji: considered one of the most beautiful streets in Kyoto.
3. Kabuki: this plebeian form of elaborate stage entertainment started in Kyoto around 1600. It was developed in Edo into what it is today.
4. Katsura Rikyu garden
5. Heian-jingu garden
6. Gion District (at night especially)
7. Kyoto National Museum
8. Saiho-ji garden
9. Fushimi (only if you're really into sake), see Gekkeikan Sake Okura Museum.
10. Uji Tea: traditional tea ceremony
11. Sanzen-In and the Jusei-en temple garden
12. Kurama Onsen: traditional Japanese bath house fairly close to Kyoto - try it.
13. Kyoto Imperial Palace
14. Fushimi Inari Taisha: my favorite Shinto Shrine

Food:
Wow! Where to begin. My favorite casual restaurants are called Izakaya. Try Suishin by Kyoto Station, and Zu Zu near Hankyu Kawaramachi Station
Try:
Ozawa (in the Gion), or Yoshikawa for tempura
Misoka-An Kawamachi-Ya for soba noodles
Umezono for omochi sweets
Morita-ya for beef dishes
Kane-yo for unagi (eel)
But there are excellent restaurants everywhere. Enjoy! Source(s): Personal experience on several occassions. Recommendation by others. Travel Guides.
