Tips for a woman on staying safe in Madrid? |
Travel Info I'll be on my own for 2 days before the rest of my group arrives. I would like to see some of the sights, etc. Some tips on doing things without attracting attention would be appreciated. Travel Tips I have never been to Madrid so I can't give you any sightseeing tips, but I have been to Spain and several European cities. * First of all, be alert!! * Make a point to identify dangerous people and situations before they become a problem. * Do not get in a taxi that is not clearly a government regulated taxi. * Train stations and the like are dangerous places full of thieves during the day; at night they are even worse. Do not under any circumstance hang around these places alone at night. * If you ask for help in a public area and the person tries to help you and lead you somewhere, do not follow them to a closed/private location regardless how much they pressure you or how harmless it seems. Many sexual aggressions start this way. * Ask the hotel service if there are neighborhoods that are to be avoided during daytime travel and nighttime travel. * If you haven't already, learn the essential phrases like "Help", "police", "I'm hurt". In Madrid English should be quite diffused but a few Spanish phrases won't hurt and should make your vacation more exciting. * Do not drink too much alcohol while you're alone, not even at the bar in your hotel. * Keep your valuables in a pickpocket-safe place. If you carry a purse it should be leather as many pickpockets carry sharp knives to slice bags open and remove their contents without their owner realizing. They also slice open jackets to get at their inner pockets. * Don't dress too touristy if you can help it as it makes you a mark. * Remember the name and address of your hotel in case you get lost and can't find your way back. Hope this helps, and enjoy your stay in Madrid! Others Stay in a good hotel (extra money for it is well worth it) Take city sightseeing tours recommended by hotel You should be safe during daytime hours if you tour good areas Ask concierge at hotel where to go eat, etc. (esp in evening) take a taxi at night, no walking around Use services of hotel to plan where to go and what to see - they know better than most where non-safe areas are! Have fun!!! |
