Mom and 3 kids traveling...safety concerns.....HELP PLEASE?

Travel Info
I am traveling with three of my children in about a week . We live in the North and we are going West ....all the way! Anyway my husband can't go with us, and I am a little worried about traveling that far alone. Does anyone know any saefty concerns that I should be aware of? Any special tips? The children are11,5 and 2! What items should I put in a car safety kit? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Travel Tips
#1 plot your route and let family or friends know what it is.
#2 drive no more than 300 miles or 8 hours in one day
#3 have your vehicle "trip safed", fix any mechanical problems you know of and pull any routine maintenance due
#5 have a cell phone handy
#6 get plenty of sleep in a hotel room enroute, don't sleep in your car, especially with 3 kids
#7 check your spare tire, keep a road map available, check the weather report bring a credit card
#8 safety kit should include: set of booster cables, flashlight, first-aid kit, reflective vest, fleece travel blanket, emergency blanket, poncho, gloves, duct tape, shop cloths, towelettes.

Lastly drive the speed limit!!!!!
Lots of OTR experience......Good luck

YOU should get a portable dvd player for the plane helps out alot, and depending on how many stops you have i suggest you use one of those child saftey leashes for your two year old, trust me I have one for my two year old and it helped out alot. You could use draminime for the two year old too
Have a full tune up on your car. Make sure you have good tires, but also correct tire pressure. Plan the stops via the internet. Don't drive yourself into slumber. The most you can do in one day is about 6 hours (for every 2 hours, plan a potty and play break) Bring gameboys/nintendo DS handheld games. These also have a port for headphones. 2 year old can play with many different baby toys. Make sure babyseat is extra soft! Those safety seats can be hard on the little butt for so long. Get a peice of memory foam from the fabric store and cut it to fit under baby's bottom. Keeping the kids quiet and occupied can help you concentrate on the road for safety.
Also, make sure you're checking in with hubby or mom everytime you stop. So if they don't hear from you in a few hours, they should contact the police on your behalf.
I traveled cross country last summer with my three boys...they were older, but I packed the following and it worked out awesome for us!

Pillow for each kid
Portable DVD player X2 - so the older two didn't have to watch Spongebob and the younger one didn't watch Wayne's World (borrowed one, owned one)
Tons of movies from the library that I took out of the cases and put in a CD case for the trip
Blanket for each kid (I used a beach towel for this)
Tons of snacks! (Easy snacks to open, lots of fresh fruit and water)
Disposable camera for each kid to create their own memories
First Aid kit (from Target)
Toys for the younger one and I made sure they were new so he wasn't bored playing with old toys...got these at Dollar Tree
And, most importantly, I stopped every three hours for a half hour to let them run around.

Have a GREAT trip! It'll be great!
The kids and I have done many cross country trips! They are great! One year I had the camper - we would just stop at the rest stops for the night. Make sure you have plenty of games! Give each one of those pencil boxes that close - the plastic ones with age appropriate toys - crayons etc.

I kept a cooler in the passenger seat so I could take care of needs. Also, I got it down to where I would stop at each half tank or close. So then they knew when we were stopping - they could look at the gas gauge themselves.

DVD's - Video games - whatever! CD's of kids songs that you can all sing together.

My kids love those times, except driving through Texas and Pennsylvania. I swear my 16 year old gets a twitch when we mention Texas in regards to driving. It takes sooooo long to get to the other side! But it is beautiful though! We woke up one day and got out of the camper and just stood there in awe!

Enjoy!
I don't have kids, but am a single woman who travels alot, and have saety concerns even for myself. I always try plan my rest stops, gas station fill ups and hotels before hand. I know its hard, but I try to do all my traveling during the day...rest stops at night scare me. Also, if I book a hotel, I like to know if it a hotel with an inside lobby, and an elevator, or a motel where the outside stairs lead right to the door. I feel so much safer in a secure, safe hotel. Also, I had a bad experience in Oklahoma City once (you said you were headed west...) It may not be the nicest place to be at 3 o'clock in the morning...
Anyways, I know I'm paranoid...but better safe than sorry...
Have a good trip:)
