Can I get rabies vaccinations in the USA? |
Travel Info I am traveling to a rabies risk area and want to be immunized before I leave. I went to the doctors but they the rabies shot is not given unless one has been bitten by a rabid animal. Can I still get the injections at a travel clinic or local hospital? Travel Tips You know meng, they have alittle place in little havana in Cuba. They treat that stuff like its ice cream, go check it out sometimes chico. Source(s): see by to the bad guy Other Travel Tips yes you can . try Hospital. Yes you can. However, vaccination against rabies is uncommon and is usually limited to individuals with a significant risk of occupational exposure to the rabies virus (e.g.vets, wildlife rehabers). Will you be involved working actively and directly with potentially rabies infected animals ? Or will you be in an area where the treatment would not be available to you should you get bit by a potentially infected animal? Then according to CDC protocol: "international travelers likely to come in contact with animals in areas of enzootic dog rabies which lack immediate access to appropriate medical care, including biologics, should be considered for preexposure prophylaxis." Please click this link. It has the info you need: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabies/pr... Get your information about the risks together and then call another Doctor and explain the situation. If they will not give you the vaccine, then contact your local health department and they will advise you how to get it. The first doctor was incorrect. CDC protocol does allow for vaccination in your circumstance. Good for you for planning ahead! are you traveling from outside the US and into it? Or flying somewhere else in the world where there may not be adequate medical help if bitten (Parts of Africa, India, S. America, etc.)? Most hospitals in the US can treat rabies, however, if exposure is possibly going to happen, then yes, get the vaccine. It CAN be treated, but in this case an ounce of prevention is better than a lb. of cure! they do carry the rabies vaccination, and it wouldnt be any trouble to get it to you in time if you were effected. The advice given is correct. Local hospitals are your best bet The potential for rabies in the U.s. can be anywhere, from dogs, rodents, bats etc. All the emergency rooms are equipped to handle exposure. |
