Travel Tips
I think it depends if you are traveling by air or land. You can find more detailed information at this web-site.

They have pushed back the requirement of having to have a passport to fly only to selected areas. They are Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. You still need to show that you have applied however. This requires a receipt from the State Department website. Land travel is still slated for Jan 2008 needing a passport. But this too may change. The wording is something like traveler MAY need a passport to go to the Caribbean, Mexico or Canda by land or ship AS EARLY AS Jan 2008. Leaving it open to push that deadline back too. Ive heard POSSIBLY as late as June or July of 2009. But that's not official. Hey, its the government!
