Travel Info
Why are you asked to pull the shades down and dim the cabin lights on a night flight?

Travel Tips
well on departure and landing they normally ask you to make sure the shades are open for saftey reasons but have never heard of them asking to shut them, whats the point if its dark anyway? thats weird. And yeah Id have to say dimming the cabin lights because people "try" to sleep?
Others
So people can sleep.
I've never been asked that. Usually they dim the lights and tell you if you'd like more light to turn yours on. Have never heard anything about the shades though.
So that everyone can relax and sleep.
