It snows occasionally but rarely settles (the ground is usually too warm because the cold-enough-for-snow weather is usually very temporary). It snows in the surrounding mountains (Mt. Wellington, Mt. Nelson and Tea Tree) but Mt. Wellington is the only common spot where it settles enough to pelt someone with a snowball. There have been a couple of occasions in documented history of people skiing into the CBD etc but these were freak events decades ago.

Be wary of non-Australian opinions on this sort of thing, the distance from Sydney in the east to Perth in the west of Australia is the same (give or take) as the distance from Paris to Bagdad. A temporary stay in one city of Australia ten years ago and then back home to Los Angeles makes for a terribly inaccurate opinion on Australia.
