Im trying to decide if I want to go to the Big Island (Hawaii) this spring break, what is it like?

Travel Info
My friend invited me to go to the Big Island with her and I have never been there. I have been to Oahu (the last time was when I was about 7, Im 18 now) and I know that, that is more of the place people think of when thinking Hawaii with lots to do. Anyways since I have to pay for my portion of the trip is it worth it?? I dont want to pay $500+ and be disappointed. Maybe I should save my money and go to Oahu sometime in the near future instead. What do you guys think? I live in California by the way.

Travel Tips
i went to the big island last summer and i thought the trip was very enjoyable

the island has a lot of farm lands and it has only 1 main highway, so most of the island is very quite and country like. and everything is spread across the whole island, so i would advise a car or go on tour buses to really get a sense of the whole big island experience,

but if you are on a budget, i would advise renting/bringing snorkeling gear. there are a couple of great beaches to snorkel at, so ask the conceirge to advise you on which beach to go to
(I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: HAPUNA BEACH)

also try to go to the the national park and see the lava flow, and visit the little town of wailea up at the northern part of the town

I like the big island but I spent time on the Hilo side. Hilo itself is a funky/interesting town. I also enjoyed the rain forests and spent time at volcano national park. all of this was very cool and very different form California. However it rains allot on that side of the island and its not rely a good beach type environment. The knoa side is essentially a desert and it looks allot like baja or the inland empire. the mega resorts are in knoa and to Me it looked allot like Irvine by the sea. however this is where the beaches are.
oahu is way funner :) big island doesnt have as great shopping places and it's more like nature stuff... if your into that kinda stuff. oahu has great malls and it's modern. x3
wow, those were some stupid previous answers. first, its kona, not knoa, kailua kona to be exact, and its beautiful and one of the best spots in the whole state
and 2nd yes, go to oahu, its more touristy...leave the outer islands to the locals!
If you have to choose, choose Oahu...there's a ton to do there..
Based on your age, I would go to Oahu. There are more commerical activities plus there is a good bus system from transportation. At 18 you will not be able to rent a car so having bus access would be a plus.

I am partial to the Big Island but just feel that at 18, having to rely on others to drive you, Oahu would be more fun for you.

You may want to consider the guide books published by Wizard Publications. They will give you a realistic guide to what is on each island.
