Did anyone here go to elementary school in Hawaii in the early '70's? |
Travel Info I lived in Hawaii (on Oahu in various cities) from around 1969-1974. I remember being in elementary school and going to school in shorts, bathing suit top and no shoes. When I tell this to people they never believe me! But I remember it clearly. Did anyone here go to school there during this time and remember this??? Travel Tips I went to elementary school in Hawaii from 1959 to 1966. Yes, in two schools in Kailua, we wore no shoes. The girls wore short muumuus, many times with shorts underneath. Outside of school, we would be in shorts and/or swimsuit. When I went to school in Ewa Beach, we had to wear rubber slippers when outside the classroom because there were sugar cane fields directly on the other side of barbed wire fencing from our play field, and the workers would sometimes leave broken bottles from lunch. I remember only having shoes for Sunday School at church. That is the only time we would wear shoes - for church. Rubber slippers for everything else, or barefoot. Others Oh boy I wish. Go to classmates.com Yep, sure remember those "hana butta days" as we locals call it. Most of the kids in the schools (usually the country schools) wore whatever they wanted; girls used to come to school with shorts and bikini tops, "rubba slippas"; then after school, hit the beach, surfing. Those were those days however, no longer allowed. In fact, we reminisce about those days a lot, along with a lot of other local favorites. Good memory! Local gal from Oahu |
