How expensive is Hawaii?

Travel Info
My friend and I are going to Kona for 9 days in July. I dont know how much money to take. I will be staying in a condo and plan on eating in as much as possible. How much money should I take for food?

Travel Tips
I live on Kauai, so please keep that in mind when you read my advise. There is now a Costco on the four large islands, that should be your first stop. At the regular grocery stores, watch the prices, I've grab the wrong brand of milk and been shocked when it rang up at $8 a gallon. Also double check all the expiration dates on milk products, Things spoil a lot faster here due to the heat.

Be sure and visit the farmer's market. (see link below) You'll get the best produce and prices. Avocado's will be in season, and we buy HUGE avocado's 2 for $1. Pour a little salad dressing in it and you've got lunch. You should be able to buy mangos and papaya (look for Strawberry or Sunrise papayas - avoid the Solos as they are not as sweet) for about $1-2 each. And a hand of Apple banana for $2.

Personally, I start collecting all the packets of ketchsup, mustard, relish, soy sauce, sugar, etc months before I leave on a trip. Then just toss them in a zip lock and bring it with me. That is one less thing to buy. Some condo's don't even have salt and pepper in the cupboards.

You can go to www.safeway.com and enter a local zip (96740 is a Kona zip code) to view their local sales flyer. Hey, there are some good prices at Safeway this week!!

Don't skimp on coffee, spend the money on Kona coffee (you can buy it at Costco) It really is worth it.

Keep in mind that things are more expensive here, but you can eat just fine here if you make an effort.

Have a great trip. Source(s): http://www.konaweb.com/konaweb/farmer.sh...
Other Travel Tips
for a week or 8 day stay with flight and accomodations, food, car and activities your looking at approximally 2,000 dollars
$1195 per person is the cost for all to visit there. i would bring a good chunk of change for food.
For food for 9 days, take about $500. I figure you will want to get some beer included in that, right?
we have banks here but for food and stuff like 3,000 for 8 weeks but we do have banks
It depends on what you plan on eating. Stores vary in prices depending on what you're buying. Just for reference, a dozen eggs will run you about $4 and a gallon of milk will run you about $6.

Happy travels!
