Has anyone ever moved to Hawaii from the mainland that can give me some advice on all the pitfalls?

Travel Tips
You came to the right place. I moved here in June last year, so my prices and info should be the most current.
Getting here:
Moving here with all of your stuff is expensive. The total cost for 2 vehicles and a 1200 sf apartment of stuff cost approximately $24,000.00. I moved here from North Carolina, so it is about the furthest away you can move in the United States. If you live closer the cost of course will be less. If you are on a shoe string budget I would suggest selling everything you have, cars included and move here with the essentials that you can pack in your suitcases and ship via UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS.

Job Hunting:
The Honolulu Advertiser uses CareerBuilder.com for their job listings and help wanted info, you can also look at Hawaiijobsondemand.com for more local jobs. You need to know what you want to do out here, it will help you refine your search.

House Hunting:
You don't just have to live in Honolulu. I live in Aiea and pay 1900 for a 1200 sf townhome. It was three bedrooms and 2 parking spots. If you look in the advertisements in the paper you will see three numbers in the description for example mine would say 3/1.5/2 the first number is bedrooms, 2nd is bathrooms, and 3rd is parking spots. You will find it hard to find the square footage of a place because they don't advertise it. The square footage out here is a lot smaller for a higher price. For example the apartment I was renting in NC was only $710/month, so I effectively tripled my housing costs for the same size place. There are not a lot of complexes to rent from, most places are rented by the owner and prices are negotiated through them or a rental agency. It will take awhile to make phone calls and visit places. I recommend using the HonoluluAdvertiser.com or honolulu.craigslist.org for finding a place to stay.

Cost of living:
You will pay more for everything here. If you are a shrewd shopper and know how to take advatage of specials in the grocery store fliers then you will have a better chance of surviving out here. You will also need to adapt your eating habits to those here. We eat A LOT of rice here so a good rice cooker will be a good investment. Learn how to use the store brands because they are normally a better buy. I pay $4 a gallon for milk at safeway. I also save a lot of money by buying in bulk at Sam's club.

If you have ANY more questions just hit up by email.

can you say "howlee"
Have a round trip ticket and at least 10 grand available.
It cost moola!
I did this about ten years ago in the Navy. It's expensive to live in Hawaii and move to Hawaii. I would recommend a visit first. Hopefully you have already.

If you have a pet, you'll have to keep it in quarantine for a month at least. That's not free.

If you're going to take a car, you'll have to ship it there. If your car isn't really worth a lot, I would sell it and buy a bike when you get there. You can get anywhere in HI on a motorcycle, and since gas is $3.15 a gallon in Kaneohe, you're gonna want a cheap mode of transportation.

I also hope you're not really close to your family or friends in the mainland. Flying back ain't cheap either!

Good luck!
