Travel Info How bad is the cost of living in honolulu? Travel Tips It can be pretty bad here. Like the other guy said, I regularly pay over $5 for a gallon of milk. Gas is horrible, rent is bad, but the food is where they get you. My wife and I went to Quiznos the other day, two sandwiches cost us $28. Its good, but not that good. Before I moved here, I used to eat out a ton, but now I eat in the vast majority of the time. I mean $60 for two at Chili's? Come on!! Others It is my understanding that it compares to San Diego,LA, NYC and Alaska just to name a few. Don't be surprised that you may pay close to $5 or so for a gallon of milk. The median price for a single family home is near to $600K, the price of gas is $3.20/gallon and rising fast, and the price for a gallon of milk is $6. Hope that helps...... You pay to live in Paradise. But don't be deceived. I just flew back from San Francisco and the gas there was about 20 cents higher than in Hawaii. As far as rent goes it just depends. My rent in San Mateo is $1700 for a small 2 bedroom apartment and my 2 bedroom townhouse in leeward Oahu is $1500. But the groceries in Caliornia are cheaper than Hawaii. Most likely due to the fact that a lot of things are imported into Hawaii. People living in Hawaii are used to the prices they are forced to pay. Well considering most of the people living on any of the islands of Hawaii, most of them live on Oahu! I don't think it really matters that much, 'cause you are going to pay the price one way or another whereever you choose to live: on an island, or the mainland, or in Alaska, etc... If it doesn't get you one way, it will get you another. So just be happy and enjoy!!! |
