Is hawaii a nice place to live?

Travel Tips
You need to think about what is important to you. I was under the impression that moving to Maui would be a big exciting move that only the really daring adventurous people would make. I thought it was going to be fun and that I could explore a whole new place.

Here's the reality. If you like adventure, keep in mind that islands are just that...islands. Flying to another island is costly after you add the flight, hotel, rental car, food, etc. So for the most part, you are where you go. Maui, for example, has many nice sights, beautiful mountains, a volcano, beaches, and shops. Think about your home town for a second. I'm sure there is at least one thing there that somebody might travel to your town to see, right? When was the last time you went there? Even Disney World gets old when you live down the street. One little island gets boring...quick.
It's very laid back. My husband loved that...it drove me bonkers. Everything was "all good". Lot's of lazy, beach lounging people. I love that, for a couple weeks, but then I want to get back to reality.
My working experience was in retail and after 6 years on Maui, I never reached the pay I made on the mainland. Many people work two jobs to make ends meet. Many local people live with there family; mother, father, sisters, brothers, neices, etc.
The housing situation is sad. We rented a one bedroom apartment for $980 a month. It wasn't that nice. Think LA prices. If you interested in buying a house, plan to spend $600,000 for something decent, but with no yard.
Ultimatly, what I would say is if you are wealthy, like a billionaire, you could live fairly comfortably. Other than that, you're poor. If you brought in $200,000 a year, you might live at the standards of a poor person on the mainland.
I know, the tradeoff of the beach and the awesome weather outweighs it. Sure, it could, if you are a beach person. I like the beach, but am more interested in family and caring for my home. If we had stayed, we would probably never own a home, we would both have to work, and would living in bad conditions for the rest of our lives.
I hate to be so negative, but Hawaii is definitly not a place to go if your looking for some experiences. If you want that, go on vacation.

not unless you have a high paying job...then it's lovely. very expensive to live in Hawaii...virtually everything is trucked in...
Yes,to visit high cost of living, because most everything is sent by plane or ships, not trucks.
Wasthere last year in May for Anniversarry.
Yes, I lived in Kailua on Oahu for a year as a live-in nanny. Absulutely gorgeous!
We have lived in Hawaii for over thirty years and love every minute of it.
Yes it is, but just like anywhere else, you have your good places and bad spots as well. Is is expensive but manageable if you insist on living here. Where there is a will, there is a way. The weather here is great and the ocean is gorgeous as well as the neighbor island. It is expensive to live here mainly because of real estate issues where condos can go from $200,000 and up and homes can go from $400,000 plus. Good luck.
