Does the northshore have those HUGE waves all year round, or only in the winter months? What are the winter months?

The same with whales. Do they only come around Oahu in the winter months?

Here's the scoop.

Pipeline is located in the middle of a seven-mile stretch of coast on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawai'i. The waves break just 50 to 75 yards off the beach, over a shallow, mostly flat lava rock reef. The surf is seasonal, lasting mainly from late fall to early spring. Pipeline reacts quickly to changes in wind, swell, and sand build-up, and when conditions aren鈥檛 right the surf can get really ugly. And while Pipeline has long been the most photographed wave in the world, featured on hundreds of magazine covers over the decades, the truth is it comes into peak form just a few times each season.

The humpbacks begin to arrive as early as late October. The population rises as the season progresses as different whales leave Alaska at different times (i.e. lactating females leave last). So although there are many whales in January, the peak population comes a little later (closer to Feb. - March) likewise, the most action/behavior viewing also comes later in the season (the season being mid Dec.- April). I think its only during the winter months cause i was just there and the waves were not that big and they are in the summer season.

Winter is still Nov-March in Hawai'i.
