I know what you mean about spiders. I hate them, too. Can't even stand to look at a picture of one.

Anyway, the spiders I remember from growing up in Hawaii were: Daddy -long-legs... these don't bite.

Some kind of garden spider (black and yellow body), it was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in length. It spins a pretty web in the gardens. My mother tells me that I put one of these in my mouth when I was 2. I'm still alive.

Then there are the tiny hopping spiders; they are only about 1/2 inch, but have thicker legs and squat bodies. You may find one outside on the balcony of your hotel room. They travel AWAY from you, not toward you when you move. I have never been bitten by any of them.

The last one I can remember are cane spiders. They live in the sugar cane fields, and are huge. About 3 inches, with thick bodies and legs. Unless you are walking through a sugar cane field (try and find one now -a-days), you won't see one.

So, there it is: On your visit to Hawaii, walk along the paths in the gardens, and not into the plantings. This way, you won't have to deal with the spiders.

There are no snakes in Hawaii. They do have centipedes, and some small scorpions, but you are unlikely to encounter any.

I don't remember ever seeing any rats. The Mongoose was imported to eradicate that problem a long time ago. I have seen mongoose a couple of times, running across a rural road, but never up close.

You could see millipedes, and those little "pill bugs" that roll up into a ball when you touch them. Also, small lizards (geckos) will enjoy the sunshine on your balcony. They don't bite, and will run away from you if you approach them.

When swimming in the ocean, there are a few days in the month that you will be warned not to go into the water due to stinging jellyfish. They swarm about 10 days after the full moon, and there will be life guard warnings for that.

I hope this helps.
Others
Not too long ago, a guy stepped on a sea-creature, got terrible sick, and died. The news prolly still has the story on that one. There's a water-spout on the south-shore of kauii that killed a guy when he looked into it. That story is older, and might be harder to find.
your biggest problem will be the rats the size of cats and also large cockroaches. the vermin in hawaii seem to be 10 times larger than in the mainland. ticks in hawaii don't carry lyme disease and just bring some "off" for mosquitos. i'm not sure if they are that bad right now. the ticks and mosquitos of hawaii in most cases are unharmful other than some pesky redness and itching if you get bit. just remember the bug spray to keep them at bay.
We don't have problems with disease carrying mosquitos or ticks.

If you're concerned with mosquitos and will be camping, bring (or buy when you get here) some Off with deet and you'll be fine. As for the ticks, stay out of the brush and you should be okay.

Have a great trip!
The most underrated is SUNBURN - most people are not aware that we are closer to the equator and are on a tropical island - the sun WILL burn you if you don't take precautions! SUNBLOCK!!!!!

Yes we have bugs, but nothing to worry about.
