Hi, I am planning a 10 day trip to Hawaii, am clueless but want to visit multiple islands. Please Help!?

Travel Info
I will not be surfing and going deep sea fishing. Would like to see some great beaches, waterfalls, hiking, snorkelling etc. I would really like to go to multiple islands. To do this which are the best islands to stay at, how do I go from one island to another. Do I rent a car? I have become very confused and since this is becoming an expensive trip, I would really like to make the best of it. Thanks

Travel Tips
I have lived in Hawaii for 40 years. I live on Maui and I have lived on the Big Island and Oahu.

If you like the city scene with lots of shopping and great beaches, cultural activities, fine restaurants, galleries, museums. nightclub shows go to Oahu. there is a lot of variety there and you can get away to isolated spots. there is an excellent bus sytem on Oahu and you can ride around the island for $2.00 and get transfers and a schedule. Ask the bus driver .You can catch the bus at the airport across from baggage terminal.;schedule posted is posted.Comes about every 20 minutes.
Go to a luau, and at least one hula show and one local enteraintment with Hawaiian entertainers. Go for a ride in an outriggger.

Interisland flights are relatively cheap with a new airlines in competition. It is called Go and early flights are as little as $20.00.
Hawaiian Air has been in business since the 40's or sooner and is a great airline also. Early bird flights are the cheapest and you can get a round trip for $80 deoending on season and time. There are alwyas specials.
Be prared to take your shoes off going through security. There are self check in's at the airports.
Don't take large plastic bottles such as water, it will be taken from you. Put your lotions etc in small 4 to 5 oz bottles.

Rent a car if you are on Maui...try Rent A Wreck--fail;y chealp. You need a credit card.Try a helicopter flight on this island. Blue Hawaii is a good one but pricey.
Go to Ulalena in Old lahaina center...great Hawaiian theatrical musical/show808 661-0831 for reservations
Of course got to Hana...
ATV tours upcountry.808-661-0288
Rent cars if you are on Big Island or Kauai.
Big island is great and wide open spaces, great beaches like Hapuna beach in Kona. Hilo is the cooler side of the island. Vocanoe is awesome but don't go off hiking trails you might get lost. Observe all signs and do what it says. But a must see and hike...going through lava tubes, bamboo forest....
Kauai is a wesome. Visit Waimea Canyon and Fern Grotto(rever) scene of Blue Hawaii. This island is laid back and great beaches.

Check out staying at some bungalows on Maui if you want to go cheap...Go into internet and look for Maui bungalows....there are a few and also on Oahu....But you might be sharing a space...up to you.

Don't bring in or take out any agriculture items...plants, etc.

Have fun.

yes, rent a car it will be cheaper then catching tour buses then you can come and go when you want to. go to maui not oahu...oahu is crazy with traffic and people..
oahu
Dear world traveller to be

I have been to hawaii 40 times and I would say that Im an expert in spending money on the islands.

If this is your first visit there I suggest two islands. Maui and Oahu. Maui can give you everything you want to do just by renting a car and take the ROAD TO HANA. Its about a 5 hour trip and you see beaches, waterfalls, hiking, whatever!

Oahu is great if you like the nightlife and a few sight seeing areas(pearl Harbor, hanama bay, a geyser or two) Thay have good restaurants as well as Maui.

you must fly to each island (less than an hour on Aloha or hawaiin air.

Good luck and have a great time

i recently spent 3 months in hawaii for work...i was on oahu the majority of my time there but also made it over to maui...
no matter which island youre on i would highly recommend renting a car!!
in oahu...the best beaches are in north shore by far!! waikiki is world famous but way over rated!! for a romantic dinner id try the restaurant at the W hotel...def climb diamond head and swim with the giant turtles...theres also a ranch on the east side of the island where they filmed jurassic park which offers ATV tours, horseback tours and jeep tours through the reserve...this is phenomenal and really fun...i def recommend it!!!
the flights in between the islands are relatively cheap (round trip $100) and you can book at the airport...
if you go to maui...definitely take a rental car on the rd to hana...itll take you a full day but its beautiful and 100% worth it...make sure to stop and do all the "sightseeing"...you can actually get a CD thatll be like a guide that will tell you where to stop and get out etc...id try to make it to a luau...theyre so cliche but the food is good and so is the entertainment...
most of all...enjoy your time!!! theres tons of places online that can tell you what to do and im sure whatever hotel you stay at will have ideas as well :)

have fun!!!
Don't try and do too much. I would concentrate on one or two islands. My choice would be Maui and Kauai. In fact, if this is your first time to Hawaii, I would simply stay on one island. Maui has mountains, surf, sand, hiking, biking, surfing, boogie-boarding, jungles, volcanoes and INCREDIBLE weather.

Fly to OGG (Kahalui Airport) from Honolulu or direct from many mainland airports. You can get to pretty much any place on Maui from OGG in about 90 minutes.

If you still intend to do island hopping, then Aloha or Hawaiian Air have island hopper flights that run about $40-$50 each way.
