We're going to Kauai for the 3rd time and Kids want to check out other Islands. Suggestions? |
Travel Info Our kids, 16, 18 & 21 like to jet ski, ride ATVs, etc. Cross Canadian Ragweed type music. We'll be in Kauai for 12 days and I think they need to see the other islands. What is the best way to island hop? Should we try to stay a couple of nights on a different island? Or just try to fly round trip and sightsee in 1 day? What islands do you suggest? I would like them to see Pearl Harbor...but not sure they would like it. How far in advace do we need to schedule interisland flights? If we did stay overnight, would it be hard to find a place to stay? We're scheduled to go in July. There would be at least 5 of us flying interisland, but could be as many as 12 Travel Tips You really can't go wrong on any of the islands! To island hop look for deals through Hawaiian airlines, it isn't that expensive. Last time we went to Kauai for a week, then took a charter plane to the Big Island. We stayed there for three nights. On the Big Island we went to Volcano National Park, saw the lava flows (which are amazing at dusk!), went to a luau, and explored the island. From there we went to Oahu for two nights and stayed on the strip in Waikiki for shopping and more of a nightlife. We went to Pearl Harbor and my siblings and I were around those ages and although it wasn't extremely exciting it was something neat to see. Just make sure you go early in the morning because it is first come first serve and you may wait for a long time. It wasn't hard for us to find places to stay, but we did make reservations in advance. Enjoy your trip! Others Go to the Big Island. It has loads of outdoor activities Go to the Big Island, the island of Hawaii. It is spectacular, and seeing a live volcano is something majestic. You can go kayaking either in Kauai or Hawaii, you can go treking in both, and Kauai is very beautiful as is Hawaii. I wouldn't suggest a one day trip over to other islands, cause that is really a tough day from morning till night, and I don't think Hawaii should be experienced in that way, when its paradise~! Why not see if they can learn to windsurf or body board near your lodging? The people who teach these sports are usually very repsonsible and watch over their people very well, so you really wouldn't have to worry. They could also learn some of the history and culture, as well as how these islands were formed. There is enough to do, and they could check it up with the service center of their hotel, so they can pick what they want. Hope you have fun. One thing, if you go to Pearl Harbor, don't take more than a fanny pack, as they have very strong restrictions on anything brought into that site. Check on the internet, they will tell you exactly what is allowed. And they mean it! nothing else!! Since you want them to see Pearl Harbor, then go to the island of Oahu. There is plenty to do on that island. I have been to Oahu six diffrent times and love it there. www.101thingstodoOahu.com www.visit-oahu.com www.thisweekinOahu.com www.tripadvisor.com wow, 12 days in kauai is a long time. but to answer your question about other islands, it is a toss up between oahu (the cliche island), and the big island. snorkeling and kayaking are universal things to do on any island. oahu: -jet skiing -polynesian culture center (a definite must) -pearl harbor -haunama bay (has a lot of fish) -kole kole pass (you probably wouldn't be able to get in because it's on a military base, and a rental wouldn't be able to go through the gate) -dole plantation -surfing (the big island surf is not good, and there are only a few decent spots.....one of them has a tiger shark there, although it's not belligerent) -ala moana (largest outdoor mall in the US) -diamond head -horseback riding -ATV tours -punchbowl -luau shows, etc. (at least the better ones) -shark cages -dinner cruises (i don't care too much for them) -overall nightlife big island: -mauna kea -volcanoes national park -kona (not all that interesting in my opinion) -horseback riding -ATV tours -rainbow falls -hilo bay in my opinion, you should go to oahu if you want your kids to be entertained. the big island has two major natural wonders to see, and overall it's beauty is amazing. it's hawaii in the purest form (it lacks the buildings, malls, etc.). i attend UH Hilo, and all of the students struggle with boredom. oahu does have beauty if you go to the north and eastern shores, and it provides the nightlife if you need it. go into a long's drug store and buy 'a guide to the big island' or the oahu counterpart for local tips, etc. etc. i'm a 19 year old local who lives on oahu and goes to college on the big island |
