Travel Info Where is the (relatively) safest are of Hawaii to live when taking natural disasters (hurricaines & volcanoes) and crime/safety into consideration? Travel Tips I would say the island of Oahu would be the safest place. Source(s): www.visit-oahu.com Other Travel Tips Seriously hawaii is located within the ring of fire sphere of influence. Since hawaii is a new island, it is still very active in volcanic activity and Big Island continues to be spawning lava/magma..so Hawaii is growing bigger yearly..some volcanoes are active under the ocean bed near several hawaii island .. Big Island has what they call VOG - it's sulfur from the volcano, sort of like smog in Los Angeles..mostly is the west side of Big Island. Living in Hawaii is as dangerous as living in CA (earthquakes) or Florida (Hurricanes) .. natural things happen http://www.free-mls-online.com/state/haw... No place in the state of Hawaii is immune from hurricanes. It all depends on the track that the hurricane takes at the time. As far as volcanoes, there is only one island that has an active volcano at the moment (the island named Hawaii) so obviously the risk is higher there than on any of the other islands where there are only dormant volcanoes. As far as crime goes, the islands are all about the same..... So...my advice, pick an island.....each has it's own charms and way of life. Good luck! The Big Island is the only island that currently has an active volcano, but it's huge - so there are lots of areas that are no where near the volcanoes. Hurricanes? Could hit anywhere; however, inland areas seem to be least vulnerable and most protected. FYI.. hurricanes rarely hit Hawaii. Damaging hurricanes that do significant damage have been separated by about 10 years on the average. These hurricanes are usually generated between Hawaii and Baja California. The most recent severe hurricane, Iniki, struck Kauai and parts of Oahu in 1991. And yes, the only active volcano is in the Big Island. The rest of the Hawaiian islands don't have any active volcanoes. |
