Planning to move to hawaii? |
Travel Info Well my sister, her husband and their 3 children want to move to Hawaii from New York. I told her about the cost and the constant volcanic eruptions. Is there any else I can tell her about Hawaii that can make her living there not so pleasant? Not that I don鈥檛 want her to be happy, I just know Hawaii is not the best place for her family. I also know that Hawaii only has 12 alphabets and they have there own time zone and no day light saving. Travel Tips We speak English here in Hawaii. It's true that the Hawaiian language has fewer alphabets (we actually have 13 letters in our alphabet) but it's more than likely that the only interaction with the language they'll have is with street names and locations. Why do you think that moving her family her isn't a great thing? Living here in Hawaii is great! We enjoy warm weather all year round and live harmoniously with people of all races and cultures. We don't have constant volcanic eruptions on all the islands (just on the island of Hawaii where the volcano has been erupting since the 70's) but the cost of living is definately high here. Yes, we have our own time zone (shouldn't we.....we're in the middle of the ocean thousands of miles away from CA) and do not participate in daylight savings time (due to our location and the fact that we don't really have changing seasons) but why does that matter? The cost of some everyday items for your reference: Dozen eggs - $6 Gallon milk - $8 Gallon gas - $3.49/regular unleaded Rent for studio apartment (when you can find it) - $1800/mo Living in Paradise - priceless If your sister truly wants to come and live out here, I have a few words of advice.....make sure they have jobs lined up before they get here or LOTS of money in the bank. The cost of living here is very high and if they don't have a job lined up, they'll have to go into competition with everyone else looking for a job here in a state that has a very low unemployment rate. Same goes for a place to live....it's not easy to find a place to live that's big enough for her size family that has reasonable rent. I would suggest she check out www.honoluluadvertiser.com for the local news and job/house classifieds. Hope this helps....... Others uhh.. seriously nobody cares about time..zones or whatever, or how many alphabets the native savages have. and volcanic... eruptions? don't really happen. trust me you would have heard about it. just tell them milk costs double and anything 'mainland', like non-sugar cane related products are 2wice the price well i have been to hawaii and its not that bad. most of the volcanoes there are dormit or extinct.it is a beautiful state and the natives there are very friendly. they dont use the language in any of the stores becuse hawaii is now very american populated. i think it is a very beautiful place and it is very good for kids. I had the BEST childhood growing up in Hawaii. Always outdoors doing stuff. Hardly ever in front of the TV. And that "it takes a village" stuff? Yup, you can find it in Hawaii. The only thing is, your sister's family have to be friendly and open there. They can't be standoffish, or show their rapier New York wit. They have to be kind and loving towards others. They have to be open minded about many different cultures and not look down their noses at anyone. Then, they will find that it is a wonderful place to live! And just think.... you'll have free lodging when you visit! About Hawaii-- the closer to Honolulu the more expensive everything is. Usually from rents, stores, malls, and such. Beware of the rush hour traffic from 4pm-5pm. That's about it other than that Hawaii is nice =) not much serious crime rate either. |
