Going to hawaii in september, any ideas of prices for food and drink? |
Travel Info Going to hawaii in september, any ideas of prices for food and drink? Travel Tips I just got back from Honolulu last week. I don't find the prices all that much higher than in central New Jersey. Depends on where you shop and what you buy. Gas (the cheap stuff) is 3.33 /gal up to 3.90 for premium. Just looking at my receipts here. At the "Big Kahuna" in Waikiki, you pay: Chicken Strips - 7.95 Build Monster Burger and Cheese - 6.95 Mahi Mahi Plate - 10.95 Orange Juice - 3.50 Order of Fries - 4.25 Diet Coke - 3.00 California Pizza Kitchen in Waikiki 2 Tortilla Spring Rolls - 7.99 Mushroom Pepperoni Sausage Pizza - 13.29 Pepperoni Pomodoro Pizza - 11.49 (the size is about a medium on the mainland) I've averaged between $ 40-60 for a proper dinner incl. tips. In Waikiki, there's an ABC store on every corner where you can get a loaf of bread, some margarine and jam or packaged turkey slices etc. You can save some money by keeping that as a snack. Bananas go for 40-65 cents a piece. A small margarine goes for about 2.60-3.60 Pineapple cost the same as in Jersey - go figure (about $ 5 for one whole). Grapes in the supermarket are almost 3$ a pound. If you want to have a reasonably good time, count on spending about 100 $ a day average for eating out, drinks and other incidentals. By the way, the vendors at the international market charge retail prices. Don't think that you're somehow getting a good deal. Haggling is already included in the price. There are a few good deals (i.e. 8 t-shirts for 12 bucks, type thing) but stay away from the jewelry unless you know exactly what you're doing. It's a great place, nonetheless. Go and enjoy and don't pinch pennies on vacation. Aloha Others Expensive. We went there on our honeymoon. Depends on where you eat/drink but they hit you with tourist prices. I went there a few years ago and prices for food and most things were basically the same as anywhere else. I know the cost of living is much higher there but that is because of the cost of housing......most things seemed on par with the rest of the country. Ahh dude its all here:http://gohawaii.about.com/library/graphi... http://www.alternative-hawaii.com/hacul/... http://www.flightcentre.us/images/travel... its about 4$ for a gallon of milk srry for the bad news but really cool ur goin to hawaii :) Don't know where you live but prices are similar to OC, CA. Some things are inflated due to the fact that it's an island. But pineapples, macadamia nuts, and bananas are cheap. write or email honolulu welcome center. it is not as expensive there as i was lead to believe.food is about what it is here.no major big deal.groceries cost very slightly more due to the fact that everything except pineapples and flowers have to be flown across the pacific. i am going again in three weeks. if you buy your tickets a few weeks before going you will get a good price. from now till sept i would go onto expedia and keep checking. till you find a price you like.the prices change ususally on tuesdays and know that tuesdays and wednesdays and thursdays are the cheapest days to fly.check expedia.com which has better rates than travelocity or cheap tickets. and if you belong to the auto club aaa they can get some good deals.aloha. |
