What vintage is this hawaii mumu? |
Travel Info Hi I found a hawaii mumu in the thrift store today. It does not say who made it, It simply has a tag that says "made in hawaii" and a size tag that says "medium" I have a theory that items tagged this way date back to the 60's but I am not sure. I know mumus of this age are very often found in good condition due to the fact people buy them on vacation, and never wear them again when they get home. I am collecting several mumu thrift store treasures for my trip and it would be cool if I found a way to tell how old they are. Any hints and tips? Travel Tips In the 60's most of the Mumus from Hawaii were made of Polished Cotton, in fairly Bright Colors....much prettier than most you see today, and yes they were marked Small, Medium and Large....but they really "felt" good, when you put them on! Been there and done that! Very popul;ar in 1969 to 1971 or 1972! Others The very rare vintage muu' muu's are sewn with reversed patterns, so they are somewhat subdued in color. Mono-chromatic (white/blue, white/red) are oldest. I too have been rescuing "Made in Hawai'i" aloha wear at our Salvation Army here in the mid-west. You need to try and contact Hilo Hatties. They specialize in Hawaiian wear. check out this web site: http://www.hilohattie.com/ You will find plenty of mu'u- mu'u's when you go to Hawaii. Some can be found at any ABC store and at Hilo Hatties! Diffrent price ranges also. www.ABCstore.com www.hilohatties.com Hey, if you're going to Hawaii in July, be sure to check out local thrift stores there for muumuus. You will more likely find the not so "touristy" ones, and who knows? Maybe even a real find. |
