Is it true that local hawaiians get better discounts? |
Travel Info my friend who lives in hawaii said that tourists pay 30% more than native hawaiians on the islands.....is it true? has anyone heard this? Travel Tips Absolutely. Known as kama'aina (children of the land) rates. Can be anywhere from 10-25% off, so that's about the same as non-locals paying 30% more. Tends more to the 10% range however which mostly covers state tax... We have to show a driver's license or other proof that we are permanent residents in order to get them... Not going to work at Wal-Mart or Costco, but smaller local retailers who appreciate our return business and have to live here too... Probably the best return %-wise is at golf courses, hotels, etc. Others I believe it. I can tell you that before I went to visit Hawaii, I found a native Hawaiian that was selling a bunch of certificate for various activities/meals for 50% under what it cost the other tourists to do them. If he was selling them at 50% off, I'd hate to know what he got them for. But hey, I saved a ton of $$, so I dont care much either. i lived in hawaii for 3 months for work and found out quickly that the locals get a "kamaaina" discount which is a locals discount...not sure what the percentage is...but it definitely exists!! Yes, kamaaina discounts are available for lots of things. Even flights between islands. You have to show proof that you live in the islands like a driver's license. It depends on where you go & what you are doing, there are some (not all) places that have discounts for Hawaii Residents (such as Hanauma Bay, it's free if your a resident), Interisland flights are discounted & a few stores for shopping but not much. I don't think tourist pay 30% more than Native Hawaiians on the islands. I highly doubt that. I believe that's just a rumor that is over exaggerated. The only Hawaii Residents that get discounts on almost everything would be The Military families. I am one of them, so I can testify to the information. Us Military families get anywhere from 25%-50% off on almost everything on this island, even our rent. Any local that will disagree with me is wrong, jealous & assuming, they aren't in the Military anyway, so they don't know anything about our discounts. Yes, the "locals" get discount rates for diffrent things. Wish I was a local!! |
