Is a hawaii celebration called luau? |
Travel Info Is a hawaii celebration called luau? Travel Tips The luau is actually celebrated as a tradition in other Pacific Islands, not just Hawai'i. Traditionally, it is a feast in which all of the foods are to be eaten by hand, no utensils. As a practical matter, it is still used by locals for a number of special occasions, one of the leading is the first birthday of a child, but there's still non commercial luaus for other occasions. The older style of luau used to serve poi, kalua pig, lomi-lomi salmon, chicken luau, poke (raw fish pronounced po kay) sweet potato, haupia (coconut pudding) with assorted local fruit. Commerical luaus are very well put together, perhaps overpriced but that's just business. There are several on Oahu, Germaine's, Paradise Cove and Poynesian Cultural Village, others may be found on other Islands, these are all oriented toward the tourists with traditional music, dances and food which is not as strange. Others yes its a party yes it is defined as a party or a big gathering! they are FUN! been to one Yes - "Luau" originally referred to only the leaves of the taro plant. It then came to refer to dishes prepared with the leaves, and finally to the feasts at which the dishes were served.
